Depends on what you want the bike for. Cruisers/choppers are good for comfortable long distance riding. Sportbikes are good for thrills on a curvy road.

Chopper and nothing else. the kind you build not buy. im a purest and i build my own rides. not kits but i design them and then build it. then you become one with your bike and you cant do that with a crotch roket.

Being a bike mechanic and riding most of my life, the best advice I can give is if you're looking for your first street bike I'd stick with a Chopper.

You can go out and blow your whole wad on an expensive ass Harley that's gonna get dropped like it or not. It's still a bike and for those "hardcore bikers" out there that say a Harley is the only real bike can bite me! Riding isn't about the brand of the bike, it's about the ride. And you'll get that ride out of ANY bike, American made or not!

I'd steer away from a Crotch rocket being a beginner(?) but if you do decide you've gotta have one I wouldn't get anything over a 600 unless you're planning on taking it on some long ass road trips otherwise the only reason to get a 1000 is if you've got a little speed demon in you.

One rule of thumb is that there are riders that've met the pavement and those who are going to so when you're checking out all those Choppers think about whats practical to learn on and once you've ridden that for a year sell it and work on building your own!

IMO chopper is only good for bar to bar rides. For anything else get a bike that will handle worth a damn. Decide if you want to go real fast or real far. Cruiser is good for a long day on the road , sportbike is good for a fun short day in the twisties.

You could also go sport touring and have something you can ride fast all day.

Me I have a touring bike a Harley Road Glide good power fair handling and I can ride 700 miles in a day and not need to have my spine replaced.

Anybody who says u cant ride a harley hard and fast through the bends either hasn't ridden one or just doesn't know how to ride, sure a rice burner will smoke me 4 flat out speed but I can still keep on their arse's the rest of the time. So just learn how to ride well then ride what ever you want !!!!!!!!!

I ride a Harley. I can't stand the thoughts of riding hundreds of miles folded up like a pretzel! I do think it is easier to start on a smaller bike just to get the hang of balance. I have talked to women who started on big bikes and they dropped them all the time so they quit. My bike is heavy, but I've been riding long enough now that i know how to balance it well.

You could always get a sportster 883 if your small, the bike is a good learner bike and is low to the ground. plus if you lay it down... you can pick up another pretty cheap. If I were you I would invest in a good set of leathers before customizing the bike cause at some point you will get some road rash and will need replacement parts, so protect the skin as much as possible..tats cost alot to replace. ride free BFFB

Actually, Sportsters have the highest seat height and highest center of gravity of all the Harleys (with the exception of a couple of specific models). It's also the fastest and most agile. The 883s are bit anemic until you do the Stage 1 upgrades (pay the Harley tax)

Well Shortie, I've been riding and building customs for 24 yrs, and a bike i'm just finishing sounds like the answer to all yer questions. I took a 2001 Buell X1 Lightning 1200, fuel injected with 101 hp and built a custom hardtail frame for it. Its compact, looks wicked and its fuk'n fast! Sport bike, crotch rocket and chopper all rolled into one. And its a Harley. What more could u ask for, heheh. It does 0 to 100 mph in something around 4 or 5 seconds. Looking forward to playing with it this summer. No, at this point its not for sale. Maybe down the road. I will post a pic of it in my profile pics on checkoutmyink. Take a look i think you might like it.

I hate you :oP i would Love a buell (even if it is made by harley) :D

Shortie the best thing to do is get through your test, then go and sit on bikes and if possible take out for a test ride. I ride a Thundercat (sports tourer) and love it, its comfy long distance, nippy round the country bends and has a fairing so i dont get too battered at higher speeds.

P.s if you want a chopper/cruiser dont by a harley they shake and rattle apart....

......*runs and hides from the harley owners :oP*

I gotta tell ya man just because u ride a Harley don't mean u hafta be the last one there. I've ridden some Harleys that'd chew up most any crotch rocket. A well put together machine with anything over 110" and them rocket riders are gonna hafta work at it to stay on my ass. In fact this Buell i just built is only 74" and it'll stay neck and neck with the 600's.

There are alot of short sports bikes out there now.

The new Kawasaki 250 though small looks and feels like a new bigger bike. Ducati 696 for one.

Picking one up this decmeber and can't wait to get on the road with it.

I recommend a sportbike. I have a 2000 Suzuki GSX-R 750 and I love it. But, you might not. You might not like a "chopper" either.

Best thing to do? Sit on both. See what feels best. I love my "crotch rocket" because for one, it fits my personality, and two...I'm comfortable when I ride it.

Check out my Gixxer in my profile!
